1.1 Solids, liquids and gases

1. Properties of different physical states

2. Change in physical states

There are two different types of vaporization: 1) evaporation and 2) boiling. The differences between two processes are summarized as follows:

Temperature can be happenedParticles in liquid
Evaporation– at any temperature
– rate of evaporation will be faster with increasing temperature
only particles on the surface can overcome attraction between particles and escape into air
Boiling– at a specific temperature which is called boiling point
boiling point will be affected by altitude (atmospheric pressure) and impurity
all particles in the liquid can overcome attraction between particles and escape into air

Volatile can be used to describe how easy for a liquid turns to gaseous state. A liquid which has lower boiling point will be more volatile. For example, boiling points of water and ethanol are 100 and 78 , respectively. Ethanol will be more volatile due to its lower boiling point.
